Upper Lake Clementine in the Auburn State Recreation Area—roughly one hour north of Sacramento, California’s capital city—will reopen on July 27 following a temporary closure due to “unsafe traffic conditions,” according to park officials.
The lake recreation area was closed on July 14 because of traffic problems on Foresthill Road during normal park operating hours, according to an announcement from officials on social media. They said cars had been parking illegally on the road and pedestrians had been crossing the street on blind turns.
They also said cars had been making illegal U-turns in traffic.
Lake Clementine will reopen with a new reservation system for weekends and holidays, park officials said. Visitors must call the Auburn recreation office between Monday and Friday to book their day-use reservations.
Reservations will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
Park officials said visitors should expect to see increases in safety signage and infrastructure on Foresthill Road upon reopening.
Lake Clementine is a popular spot for boating, water skiing, and fishing. According to California State Parks, the manmade lake was created in 1939 with the completion of the North Folk Dam on the American River.
