WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump is calling on House Republicans to accept the Senate’s version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which was passed after a 24-hour all-night session on July 1.
Several Republicans in the House, particularly members of the House Freedom Caucus, have expressed reservations about the Senate’s version of the bill, which they say will increase spending beyond thresholds set in deals made to pass the House version of the bill in May.
Trump urged House Republicans to quickly pass the Senate’s version to meet his self-imposed July 4 deadline.
The Senate on Tuesday passed the bill by a vote of 51–50, with Vice President JD Vance visiting the Senate to break the tie. Three Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, and Rand Paul of Kentucky—voted against the bill.
The House Rules Committee is currently debating the Senate-passed bill. The panel will need to clear the bill before it heads for a House floor vote.
The House narrowly passed another version of the bill in late May by a single vote. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) can only afford to lose three Republicans on the floor, assuming all Democrats vote against it.
House Republican leadership, in a statement after the Senate approved the package, said it was “ready to finish the job” and deliver the legislation to Trump’s desk by July 4.
Meanwhile, House Democrats are weighing options to prevent Republicans from passing the bill by Independence Day.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Tuesday that “all legislative tools and options are on the table.”
