President Donald Trump is set to convene a Cabinet meeting on July 31 at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, according to his schedule.
This followed Trump’s announcement on July 30 that the Board of Peace had reached a deal to disarm the Hamas terrorist group in Gaza, with Israeli forces set to withdraw after the disarmament.
The last Cabinet meeting was held in May amid renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran. The meeting was moved from Camp David to the White House due to severe weather at the time.
The upcoming meeting also comes after the Senate on July 30 rejected a resolution that would have required the president to end military action against Iran unless authorized by Congress.
The vote marked the 13th time the Senate has voted on a resolution to end the war in Iran.
On July 23, the House voted 214–208 to advance a resolution calling for the United States to cease its military action in Iran, but the Senate later rejected a similar resolution in a 47-49 vote.
Trump ordered additional military strikes against Tehran in July following the collapse of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. The preliminary agreement had temporarily paused the conflict, which started when the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28 to dismantle the regime’s nuclear weapon program.
Trump again directed a pause on military strikes against the regime last weekend following 13 consecutive days of strikes, which U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said was intended to allow room for diplomacy between the two sides.
The U.S. military recently launched another round of strikes. U.S. Central Command said on July 29 that it carried out “a heavy wave of strikes” against Iran in response to Tehran’s attempted missile attacks on U.S. forces stationed in the Middle East.
The strikes targeted Iran’s military command centers, missile and drone facilities, as well as coastal surveillance sites, and maritime capabilities.
“We’re going to be hitting them very hard, ‘cause it’s our turn to hit them. They know it’s coming, they’re asking us not to do it,” Trump said prior to the strikes on July 29.
Camp David has been the site of many important diplomatic and historical events over the years.
Trump visited Camp David nearly 15 times during his first term. In 2019, he announced the cancellation of a planned Camp David meeting with the Taliban, which was intended to help end 18 years of war in Afghanistan.
