President Donald Trump said Democrats have gone too far left, as evidenced by their choice of a New York City mayoral candidate who espouses far-left policies.
In a pair of posts on his Truth Social platform, the president reacted to the upset victory of Zohran Mamdani, currently a New York state assemblyman who describes himself as a “Democratic socialist” on his account on social media platform X.“It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line,” Trump wrote on June 25, calling Mamdani a “communist.”
The president is a native New Yorker who relocated to Florida several years ago.
Mamdani, 33, defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other candidates in the June 24 New York mayoral Democratic primary election. As a result, Mamdani will advance to the Nov. 4 general election, where his main contender is expected to be the current mayor, Eric Adams, who is running as an independent. The Republican candidate is Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels group. He lost to Adams in the 2021 election.“We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous,” Trump said, denouncing high-profile Democrats who backed Mamdani.
“Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!”
The Epoch Times sought comment from Mamdani but did not receive a reply before publication time.Mamdani’s social media bio reads, in part, “Running for Mayor to freeze the rent, make buses fast + free, and deliver free universal childcare.”
Just before the polls closed in New York on Tuesday, he wrote: “This is the dawn of a new era in New York City. And we will win it together.”
Several hours later, he posted a message crediting his supporters for his victory and saying, “I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City.”
In a separate post, Trump, a Republican, said he had an idea for the Democrats “to bring them back into ‘play’” on the federal level.“After years of being left out in the cold, including suffering one of the Greatest Losses in History, the 2024 Presidential Election,” Democrats should nominate Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) for president, Trump suggested.
