President Donald Trump is calling on government-sponsored mortgage financers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to create incentives for homebuilders, suggesting that millions of lots are staying idle while the nation faces a shortage of affordable homes.

In an Oct. 5 post on his Truth Social platform, the president indicated that “Big Homebuilders” are fueling the country’s housing affordability problem, comparing them to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for its role in keeping oil and gas prices high.
