ORANGE COUNTY, N.Y.—The small town of Wallkill on May 22 voted to establish an ambulance district and create a new tax aimed at keeping the Town of Wallkill Emergency Medical Services (TOWEMS) out of financial ruin.

Property owners in the new district will pay $2.08 for each $1,000 worth of owned property, according to the city. The average single-family property in Wallkill is worth $55,000, which means the average family will pay $114.64 to the ambulance district annually.
