On Sunday, Oct. 1, at least 59 people died and 527 were injured when a man in a 32nd-floor hotel room fired on a crowd of about 22,000 at a country music festival below. The massacre happened at the end of the three-day Route 91 Harvest Festival on the Las Vegas strip during the performance of artist Jason Aldean.
The shooter, later identified as Mesquite, Nevada, resident Stephen Paddock, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound when police broke into his hotel room door. They found at least 23 firearms, including handguns and rifles, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in the room.
