A student has died after a school bus rolled over into a ditch, struck a power line, and caught fire on Oct. 3.
The incident occurred between 3:45-3:50 p.m. local time at Lawson Rd, near Cartwright Rd, in Mesquite, Texas
The school bus had 42 students from Terry Middle School on board, one of whom died at the scene. Three students were sent to hospital with minor injuries, and 38 students were taken back to Terry Middle School to reunite with their families.
“We ask for continued prayers for this grieving family, the Terry Middle School family and our entire Mesquite Independent Schools District community.”
The MISD statement noted that first responders and community members acted quickly to help the students out of the crash.
“We know these citizens saved many lives tonight and we are deeply moved by and thankful for their heroic acts,” the statement said.
Mesquite Superintendent David Vroonland was meeting privately with the family, according to the statement.
Earlier, Vroonland said in a statement that the school principal Kelley Prewitt and counsellors were on campus and available to help students.
