Social Security Administration (SSA) employees incorrectly denied children’s insurance benefits to thousands of applicants, the agency’s watchdog said in an audit report published on Sept. 29.

The social security program provides monthly benefits to dependents of retired, disabled, or deceased workers, such as children. In its analysis, the SSA’s Office of the Inspector General looked at 96,957 initially denied claims for children’s insurance benefits that were filed between January 2019 and July 2023.
