Carrie Romney, the sister-in-law of former Sen. Mitt Romney, has been found dead near a parking structure in Southern California.
According to a news alert from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, homicide investigators responded to a parking lot in Santa Clarita on Oct. 10, where they identified the 64-year-old.
Authorities were on scene at around 9 p.m. near the Valencia Town Center shopping mall, with local reports indicating she either jumped or fell from the five-story structure.
As of Oct. 13, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office listed her cause of death as “deferred” while toxicology tests are pending.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing; however, her place of death was listed as the “street” and her body status as “ready for release.”
The Epoch Times reached out to the Sheriff’s Department for comment, but did not hear back by time of publication.
On Oct. 14, the former Republican presidential nominee mourned the loss, speaking out for the first time on behalf of the Romney family in a statement to People.
“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” Mitt Romney told the outlet. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
Mitt was the 70th governor of Massachusetts, serving from 2003 to 2007, and was a senator for the state of Utah from 2019 to 2025. In 2012, on his second attempt, he secured the GOP nomination in the presidential election, and ran against Barack Obama. In 2008, he lost the Republican nomination to the late Sen. John McCain.
Carrie was the wife of Mitt’s older brother and attorney, G. Scott Romney, 84. Over the years Scott frequented the campaign trail in a show of his support for his brother.
NBC reported that Carrie and Scott had been separated since May of this year after eight years of marriage, citing an L.A. County divorce petition filed by Scott on June. 10, listing “irreconcilable differences.”
Scott was previously married to Ronna Romney and together they share daughter Ronna McDaniel, who served as chair of the Republican National Committee from 2017 to 2024.
Mitt and Scott were sons to the late George W. Romney, a politician himself who served as the 43rd governor of Michigan from 1963 to 1969, and as secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1969 to 1973.
