At least three people were shot in front of the University of Mississippi Medical Center on Nov. 29, according to Jackson Police.

Early reports indicated it was an active shooter situation, but Jackson Police Chief James Davis told the Clarion-Ledger that that does not appear to be the case.

Davis said someone fired shots at a grey Honda with a female and two kids inside.  The children, ages 1 and 3, were shot. The woman in the car grabbed the children and ran into UMMC for treatment, the Clarion-Ledger reported.

Both children are alive, Davis said, adding he doesn’t know their condition. One was shot in the leg and the other was shot in the body.

The shooter is on the run, and police are actively searching for the suspect, WLBT reported.
A text message sent to medical center students and staff, saying a shooting occurred at Parking Garage B, WLBT reported. The text reads: “This is not a drill. RUN to safety. HIDE in a locked room. FIGHT as a last resort... All individuals on campus are to stay away. Campus police are responding.”

It is no longer an active shooter situation, according to local news reports.

Other details about the shooting are not clear.

“In 2017, there were an estimated 1,247,321 violent crimes. The estimated number of robbery offenses decreased 4.0 percent, and the estimated number of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter offenses decreased 0.7 percent when compared with estimates from 2016. The estimated volume of aggravated assault and rape (revised definition) offenses increased 1.0 percent and 2.5 percent, respectively,” says the FBI.
