Three police officers were shot and killed while two others were injured in a shooting in North Cordorus Township, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 17, according to state police.
The shooter was killed by police, authorities said.
The shooting took place in rural North Cordorus Township, which is roughly 115 miles west of Philadelphia and close to the Maryland border.
“The grief will be unbearable but we will bear it,” Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris said at a news conference. “We will not rest until we conduct a full, fair, and competent investigation into this matter.”
York Hospital said two people had been admitted in serious condition and enhanced security protocols had been put in place.
“We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said. “This kind of violence is not OK, we need to do better as a society.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi said, “Violence against law enforcement is a scourge on our society and never acceptable.”
“As we learn more, follow all guidance from police and stay away from the area,” he said.
In a series of social media posts, state Attorney General Dave Sunday said he was on scene and was urging all residents to “follow the instructions of local law enforcement.”
Sunday added that he was praying for the recovery of the two who were injured, and extended his “deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends these heroes leave behind.”
A local school district said no schools or students had been involved in the shooting but issued a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted later in the afternoon.
Authorities “advised us to hold students and staff in our buildings as a precaution while several area roads are closed,” the school district said in a statement.
Medical response teams were seen on a rural road in south-central Pennsylvania that cuts through an agricultural zone with farm fields and a barn.

Law enforcement has not yet provided any details on who was involved in the shooting. Authorities were maintaining a perimeter around the scene, pushing people back as 30 police vehicles cordoned off roads surrounded by a goat farm, barn, and soybean and corn fields.
“Pennsylvania State Police, Northern Regional Police, and numerous emergency responders are at the scene. The York County Commissioners are monitoring the situation closely and praying for all those involved,” the county said in a statement.
In February, a man armed with a pistol and zip ties killed an officer in the same area after entering a hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) and taking staff members hostage. A shootout between an officer and the suspect left both dead.
