Severe Weather Cuts Power to More Than 373,000 Residents Across US

Pennsylvania was the hardest-hit state, with more than 50,000 customers without power.

More than 373,000 customers in the United States were without electricity on July 6 as severe storms swept through parts of the country, causing widespread damage.

Pennsylvania was the hardest-hit state, with more than 50,000 customers without power, followed by Michigan, Louisiana, and New Jersey, which also recorded some of the highest numbers of power outages, according to data from PowerOutage.com.

“This weekend, severe weather impacted 64 of our 67 counties here in Pennsylvania—resulting in flooding and wind damage that left hundreds of thousands without power,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said in a post on X.

Pennsylvania’s PPL Electric Utilities said in its latest update on July 6 that it had restored power to more than 225,000 customers since the storm began on Sunday.

The utility said it had mobilized over 2,000 personnel to support restoration work across its service territory and expected restoration efforts to continue until July 8.

“We’re continuing to assess remaining damage and will narrow down ERTs as crews arrive to make repairs,” it stated.

Michigan’s DTE Energy said on its website that it expects to restore power to more than 95 percent of impacted customers by July 7.

The company urged customers to keep at least 25 feet away from downed power lines or anything in contact with them, noting that the lines could pose danger.

“We know how challenging it is to be without power, so our team remains focused on working as quickly and safely as possible to restore all customers impacted by the weekend’s storms,” the utility stated.

At 10 p.m. ET Monday evening, 305,046 customers were still without electricity, according to PowerOutage.com.

FirstEnergy said on July 6 that its subsidiary, Jersey Central Power & Light, has restored electricity to more than 300,000 customers after severe storms caused extensive damage to power lines and utility poles. Jersey Central Power & Light primarily serves customers in New Jersey.

The utility added that its remaining 40,000 customers still without power will have their power restored by July 7 or July 8.

“While significant progress has been made, crews continue to encounter areas with extensive storm damage, difficult terrain and challenging access conditions that can extend restoration times,” it stated.

New York’s Con Edison said on Monday that its crews have restored power more than 166,800 customers affected by extreme weather events, from record-breaking heat to severe thunderstorms with destructive wind gusts.

It stated that Yonkers, Mount Vernon, Rye, and New Rochelle were among the hardest-hit cities in New York, with the highest numbers of storm-related outages.

The severe storms followed a heat wave that gripped parts of the central and eastern United States last week. New Jersey Health Commissioner Dr. Raynard Washington said on July 4 that at least 19 suspected heat-related deaths were reported in New Jersey.
