SANTA ANA—The first of three Orange County Jail inmates to be tried for a brazen January 2016 breakout was convicted April 8 of kidnapping, a day after he was convicted of the escape, and faces a maximum of nearly nine years in state prison.

Bac Tien Duong, 48, was acquitted April 7 of felony kidnapping for robbery, but found guilty on April 8 of the lesser charge of simple kidnapping. A mistrial was declared on a felony count of unlawful taking of a vehicle when jurors split 6-6 on that charge.
