A litter of puppies found abandoned in the middle of a Texan desert is now up for adoption in Mission Viejo, Calif.

Their journey to Orange County began about five months ago, when a woman walking her dog in the Lone Star State happened upon a box of 12 newborn pups. She drove them to meet with the Ghetto Rescue FFoundation (GRFF), a Los Angeles-based group of fire and police personnel dedicated to helping animals in need.

Due to being abandoned and only a few weeks old, the dogs required extensive medical care, fluids, and bottle feeding, according to the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center (MVASC). Two of the dogs didn’t survive.

Four of the puppies were later transferred to the MVASC, which officially listed them for adoption June 22.

The group, which the center called the “Zodiac” pups, are named after the astrological signs Gemini, Leo, Pisces, and Sagittarius. They are estimated by animal experts to be Australian cattle/Catahoula leopard-dog mixes, and will grow to be medium-large dogs.

Brynn Lavison, operations supervisor for MVASC, said the organization has already received multiple calls regarding interest in adoption. After the pups are sterilized later this week, they will be ready for adoption, she said.

“They’re extremely sweet, they’re slightly shy, but they’re extremely sweet and they’re going to make really great pets for people,” Lavison said. “They’re very healthy ... and they’re doing great.”

The dogs will require a large yard and an active family, according to a listing on Mission Viejo’s website. Those interested in applying to adopt a dog can go online or call 949-470-3045.
