Pregnant Arizona Woman Shot While She’s Sleeping, Baby Survives

A 19-year-old pregnant woman was shot and killed while she was sleeping after someone opened fire on her southern Arizona home on Sunday morning, according to reports.

Doctors, however, were able to deliver her baby, the Tucson Police Department said in a news release. Several people in the home were awoken at 4:30 a.m. hearing the sounds of Jasmine Vega screaming before they found her “unresponsive,” police said.

Officials then “rendered aid and transported her to a local-area hospital,” and “shortly after arrival, she was sadly pronounced deceased,” the department said in the release.

“Vega was approximately six months pregnant. Hospital staff were able to successfully deliver her unborn child, who is currently being treated at the hospital,” the release added.

The child’s father, Anthony Rivera, told Tucson News Now that the baby boy is in critical condition and on life support.

Police said “several projectile holes in the walls of the residence” were found, indicating that someone opened fire on the home.

No one else was hurt in the shooting, officials said.

Police are not sure if anyone inside the house was specifically targeted in the shooting.

No suspects were identified in the case.

Detectives with the Tucson Police Department’s Gang Unit are now involved in the investigation, reports said.
