VALENCIA, Calif.—An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s sergeant was killed in a single-vehicle traffic collision in Valencia, authorities announced Aug. 2.

The crash occurred about 11 p.m. on Aug. 1 near McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. It was unclear what caused the crash.

Investigators identified the deputy as 43-year-old Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau Sgt. Jason Viger. He joined the department in 2008 and held positions at the North County Correctional Facility, Palmdale Station, Lancaster Station, Narcotics Bureau, and most recently, the Homicide Bureau.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the tragic death of one of our valued department members, Homicide Bureau Sgt. Jason Viger, who was tragically killed in an off-duty vehicle traffic collision,” according to a department statement. “Our condolences and prayers are with Jason’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

Viger is survived by his parents, four children, and three siblings. One of his siblings is a sheriff’s department sergeant.

“Sgt. Jason Viger was passionate and loved being a deputy sheriff, and his untimely passing has profoundly impacted our department,” Sheriff Robert G. Luna said in a statement. “He will be greatly missed within the LASD family, and his unwavering dedication to protecting and serving our community will leave a lasting legacy.”

Sheriff’s officials hailed Viger as a dedicated investigator who had a passion for golf and enjoyed watching his children participate in sports. He took great pride in being the first sergeant to be part of the Sheriff’s Overdose Response Task Force, according to the department.

“The department is working closely with Jason’s family to offer our support and assistance as they navigate this profound loss,” sheriff’s officials said.
