A young woman from Sanford, North Carolina, is in custody after she abandoned the body of a friend on the side of the road on New Year’s Eve.

Destiny Helms, 20, was in her car with her friend Corey Clark, 27. Clark was allegedly using drugs and apparently took too much. He died of a suspected overdose in his friend’s car, reported ABC11.

Helms drove to the house of another friend and reported that Clark had overdosed and died. His body was left in the car.

The friend advised Helms to take the body to a hospital.

However, Helms was unwilling to call the police or bring the body to a hospital.

Instead, she drove to a remote region of town and left the body by the roadside.

At about 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 31, Lee County Sheriff’s deputies were called with a report of a body on the side of the road. They responded to Kelly Drive between the 421 bypass and Pumping Station Road where they found Clark’s remains.

Deputies later arrested Helms and charged her with Concealment of Death—Intent to Conceal Unnatural Death by Dismembering or Destroying Human Remains. Her bond is set at $75,000, according to the county jail report.

Clark’s body is scheduled to be autopsied.
