The state of California has sued five major oil companies along with the United States’ biggest oil and gas lobby, accusing them of causing climate change-related harm by lying to the public in order to downplay the “grave dangers” posed by fossil fuels.

The lawsuit (pdf), filed at the Superior Court of the State of California, County of San Francisco, on Sept. 15, claims that the energy giants’ actions—described in the complaint as “vile, base, and contemptible”—have caused tens of billions of dollars in damage.
