California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday praised the Biden administration’s announcement that it was moving to restore California’s emissions waiver, a policy shift that would let the state set more stringent emission standards for cars and SUVs.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Monday announced that it is considering overturning a Trump-era action called the Safer Affordable Fuel-Efficient Vehicles Rule Part One: One National Program Rule (SAFE-1), which revoked a waiver that let California enforce stricter standards on greenhouse gas emissions and zero-emissions vehicle sales mandates. SAFE-1 also sought to preempt other states from adopting California’s greenhouse gas emissions standards, which thirteen states have opted to do (pdf).
