New York Gov. Kathy Hochul proposed legislation on Jan. 21 to ban students from using cellphones in schools to minimize distractions during school hours.

In her budget address, Hochul said teachers face challenges in competing for students’ attention because of phone distractions. To address this issue, the governor aims to implement a statewide cellphone ban in schools to start in the next academic year.
