WASHINGTON—The Trump administration will soon enforce a long-awaited “public charge” rule aimed at making sure future immigrants to the United States can support themselves without becoming a burden on taxpayers.

The move, which is part of President Donald Trump’s promised overhaul of the nation’s immigration policies, will give the government some leeway to deny green cards, which bestow permanent resident status on individuals, if, according to government methodology the individuals are thought likely to become reliant on welfare programs.
