Police arrested the mother of Sherin Mathews, the 3-year-old Texas girl who went missing last month before she was found dead near her family’s home, according to reports.
Detectives found out that Sini left her daughter home alone while she and her husband, Wesley Mathews, went to dinner on Oct. 6 with their biological daughter, reports said. Sherin was reported missing at 8 a.m. on Oct. 7. Police discovered her body in a culvert on Oct. 22.
She faces a charge of child endangerment and abandonment, and she turned herself into police.
Her adoptive father, Wesley Mathews, has already been arrested and charged with injury to a child. He’s in jail on $1 million bond.
Sherin’s cause of death has not been revealed yet.
Wesley initially told police that he put Sherin outside at 3 a.m. as punishment for not drinking her milk. A few weeks later, after her body was found, he changed his story, saying that she choked.
Later, he confirmed that he decided to leave Sherin home alone after she refused to drink milk while he grew impatient. He told his wife to come with him. “She voluntarily complied without being coerced or threatened, leaving Sherin Mathews home alone in the kitchen of the house,” Patch.com reported, citing the affidavit.
The father estimated that they left Sherin alone for an hour and a half before they returned. He stated she was still in the kitchen when they got home, the affidavit said.
