Nearly half of the kiosks set up by the IRS to enable taxpayers to file tax returns and complete other services are inoperable or have an unknown status, a watchdog said in a new report.

Of the 100 kiosks located across 37 taxpayer assistance centers, 40 were not operable, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said in a report released on Aug. 8.
