A man who hit a Border Patrol agent with a rock was shot by agents on Sunday before he was arrested near the Tijuana River on the U.S.-Mexico border near San Diego, California.
The incident unfolded between the U.S.-Mexico border and Monument Road in San Diego, said San Diego police Homicide Captain Thomas Underwood.
“In the course of that contact a fight ensued, and an agent was knocked off his ATV with a rock,” he said.
Underwood added: “The suspect then jumped onto the agent’s ATV and a pursuit ensued where the suspect eventually lost control, crashed and was taken into custody. During the incident, at least two border patrol agents fired their weapons at the suspect.”
When agents chased him, they fired their weapons and hit the man at least once, Underwood said. The suspect then crashed the Border Patrol ATV into a fence.
While the suspect was identified as a 19-year-old man, his name was not disclosed.
No Border Patrol agents were seriously hurt.
“CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility and U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector is fully cooperating with all investigators,” Border Patrol stated to the NBC affiliate on Sunday.
Border Patrol said that in 2017, none of its agents fired a gun at a suspect.
Other details about the incident were not made clear.
