A crash on Interstate 65 in Indiana led to the leak of hazardous chemicals, and police have said that first responders are facing an explosion risk.
WHAS-11 reported that houses near Seymour in Jackson County have been evacuated due to the HAZMAT situation.
Sgt. Stephen Wheeles noted that the fire situation on I-65 is continuing to deteriorate, saying that portions of the highway have been closed down. Houses within a half-mile have been evacuated, according to his Twitter feed.
Wheeles added the crash happened near the 43-mile marker at approximately 5 a.m., and traffic is now being diverted off I-65 in the area. The crash involved three semi trucks, he told The Indy Channel.
One person was injured in the accident, but it doesn’t appear to be serious, a report from WHAS-11 said.
It’s not clear what kind of hazardous chemicals leaked from the truck.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is cleaning up the chemicals, WLFI-TV reported.
Police said that it will take hours to clean up the situation.
