Homicide detectives in Hawaii are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl who passed away 5 weeks after suffering severe burns while she was in the care of her father at an Army base.
Ocean Wright was rushed to a hospital on Aug. 18 after military law enforcement and medical personnel responded to a 911 call from a sergeant’s home at Schofield Barracks, an Army base on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
“I only can imagine the screams that she had and the pain that she felt,” Curry said.
Wright lived with her mom and two siblings in Las Vegas and traveled to Oahu to stay with her father for two months. The father was living with his new wife and two children. According to Curry, the adults’ explanation of the incident kept on changing.
The 2-year-old girl died on Sept. 25 more than 5 weeks after she was hospitalized.
“I felt like I wanted to die. I watched my baby on life support for 23 days. I watched her suffer for five weeks,” her mother said.
According to the Army, the dad is a 25th Infantry Division soldier. He and his current family have no history of child abuse, an Army representative said. The Army notified Child Protective Services about the burning incident one hour after Wright was sent to a hospital.
“I’m never going to stop until justice happens,” said Curry. “My daughter might be dead in flesh, but she still lives on because as long as I’m her mother, I’m never going to stop.
The Honolulu Police Department opened a first-degree assault case for the injuries. They said no one as yet has been arrested, although a 21-year-old woman is considered a suspect.
The case is being treated as unattended death while police wait for autopsy results.
