A man in his 70s who was believed to have a bomb was shot and killed by police during a bank robbery in the Orange County city of Fullerton on March 26, the Fullerton Police Department said in a statement.
The incident occurred around 5:09 p.m. after police responded to a robbery in progress at the Wells Fargo Bank at 141 W. Bastanchury Road.
The masked suspect entered the bank and demanded money from a teller. He then produced a white box that he said was a bomb and threatened to detonate it, according to the statement.
Authorities said the shooting occurred once the suspect left the bank with money and the box, which contained an item that had been made to look like an explosive device.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He is believed to be in his 70s, but his identity has not been revealed pending notification of next of kin.
Police said that the investigation is ongoing and that no officers or witnesses were injured.
