A Fort Meyers, Florida, police officer was rushed to the hospital by a fellow officer after being shot in the line of duty on the evening of July 21.
Jobbers-Miller was responding to a call at a Marathon gas station on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fort Myers, at 7:30 p.m. on July 21 when an assailant opened fire.
Another officer, unwilling to wait for an ambulance, transported Jobbers-Miller to Lee Memorial Hospital Trauma Center where he underwent emergency surgery.
“Words cannot express the emotions running through the Fort Myers Police family at this time,” said Chief of Police Derrick Diggs. “Our department spent the night in anxious anticipation as our comrade and co-worker underwent lifesaving surgery.
“We are grateful to the many people and agencies who have expressed their support, to the medical professionals who rushed to save him and to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) for their immediate assistance with this situation, Diggs said."
The suspected shooter was subsequently arrested.
Fox4 asked Walter Zalisko, CEO of the private investigation firm Global Investigative Group and former chief of police in Oak Hill, Florida, why more information about the arrest hadn’t been released.
“The fact that the suspect is still alive, so police don’t want to put out a lot of information at this point,” Zalisko explained. “If the suspect was deceased, then they would be bringing out a lot more information. But the investigative process is going to be very careful and meticulous now.”
