A man who preyed on children while babysitting has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, Florida officials announced this week.
Michael McCabe of Port Orange was convicted of molesting several children.
The 47-year-old used his “trusted position as a babysitter to molest and sexually assault five girls under the age of 18,” Bryan Shorstein, a spokesman for the State Attorney’s Office, told the Orlando Sentinel.
McCabe befriended several families, moved into their homes, and later molested their daughters, according to prosecutors.
The investigation began in December 2016 after two girls, ages 15 and 16 at the time, came forward to say that “Mikey” had molested them when he was their live-in babysitter when they were between 7 and 11 years old, reported the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
A nine-year-old girl also reported that McCabe molested her beginning when she was five years old, while yet another girl said she was molested while being babysat by McCabe.
“Their childhood was stolen by this scumbag,” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood told the News-Journal.
“McCabe previously pled no contest to four counts of sexual battery against a child, two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation against a child, and three counts of attempted lewd and lascivious molestation,” noted MyNews13.
In addition to his prison sentence, McCabe was ordered to serve 25 years sex offender probation after his release from prison.
