ANAHEIM, Calif.—A felony sexual assault suspect was fatally shot by Anaheim police on Oct. 3.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday near the ARCO station and the AmPm convenience store in the 300 block of West Orangewood Avenue, according to the Anaheim Police Department.

According to police, the shooting occurred when officers “attempted to arrest a felony sexual assault suspect, 29-year-old Luis Munoz of Anaheim.”

“Munoz ran from officers, causing officers to pursue him to the area of Harbor Boulevard and Orangewood Avenue, where a confrontation occurred between Munoz and several Anaheim police officers,” leading at least one officer to open fire, police said.

“... Munoz was struck at least once by police gunfire,” police said. “Munoz was treated at the scene by Anaheim police officers and personnel from Anaheim Fire and Rescue. Despite their efforts, Munoz was pronounced deceased at the scene. A large knife, believed to belong to Munoz, was recovered at the scene.”

No officers were injured as a result of the shooting, police said. An investigation was underway involving Orange County District Attorney’s Office personnel and Anaheim police.
