Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) has revealed he thinks the ongoing criminal cases against President Joe Biden’s son Hunter are “legally justified” and not politically motivated.

Hunter Biden has been the subject of several ongoing criminal cases, with the latest developments being fresh charges—three felonies and six misdemeanours—for tax offences. An attorney for Hunter Biden has publicly dismissed the charges as part of a political agenda.
During a Dec. 10 interview for NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sen. Murphy shot down claims that the charges against Hunter Biden are for any other reason than that he broke the law on multiple occasions.

“I think this is a very troubled individual who has done things that are worthy of prosecution, and so I look forward to that case continuing,” he said.

“I think Hunter Biden is going to be held accountable in court for any violations of the law that he’s committed. And the American public are going to get the chance to watch that play out in real time.”

Whether Hunter Biden’s court cases will affect President Biden’s chances at re-election remains to be seen. Ultimately, the choice is up to voters, and Sen. Murphy believes the American public will not hold the alleged misdeeds of the younger Biden against the president.

“Ultimately, the American people understand that Hunter Biden is not going to be on the ballot next fall—that Joe Biden is going to be on the ballot, and that this is a president who has led an economic recovery that has been pretty unprecedented,” he said.

“That’s, I think, going to be what matters to the American people,” Sen. Murphy added.

The alleged actions of Hunter Biden have left the president in an tough position, to say the least. However, House Republicans, on the other hand, claim the president was directly involved in his son’s business activities and have opened an impeachment inquiry to investigate claims that have been made to the public. President Biden is accused of abusing his power, enabling bribery, high crimes, and misdemeanors during his time as vice president.

House Republicans released the text of a resolution to formalize the House impeachment inquiry of President Biden on Dec. 7. The resolution is scheduled for markup on Dec. 12, with a vote expected later this week. President Biden and the White House have consistently denied any wrongdoing and called the whole affair politically motivated. It has been claimed that Hunter Biden used his last name to further his own career, but that President Biden was not directly involved.

Regardless of the outcome of the Hunter Biden trials and the President Biden impeachment inquiry, Sen. Murphy says that in his view, it’s inappropriate for a politician’s family member to profit off their last name. He claims the family of former President Donald Trump have used the White House for their own ends as well. Specifically pointing to Jared Kushner, former president Trump’s son-in-law, and his business dealings with Saudi Arabia after President Trump left office.

“Frankly, when I look at the Trump family, it seems that they have made an industry out of profiting off Donald Trump’s presidency,” he said.

“I think the American public are going to be very concerned about what has happened inside the Trump family since Donald Trump left the White House,” Sen. Murphy added.

Mr. Kushner has argued amid critics’ claims of ethical concerns that he has made every effort to publicize and register his business dealings according to legal requirements for transparency, alleging a difference between his conduct and those alleged of Hunter Biden.

Sen. Murphy did not provide any other context or evidence around his claims about the Trump family, and “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker had to remind him they were talking about the Biden family.

Mr. Murphy said he was “certain” the country would see a significant difference between President Joe Biden and former President Trump in the next election, and it was his belief that voters would opt against another Trump presidency.

The Epoch Times has contacted the White House and former President Trump for further comment on Sen. Murphy’s remarks.
