Shootings in Chicago over the weekend left eight dead and 20 others wounded.

Starting the evening of Friday, Oct. 19, seven people were shot, with two of them dying from their wounds, reported the Chicago Sun-Times. On Oct. 20, three people were shot dead and four others left wounded.

On Sunday, three people were killed and seven others wounded. And in the early hours of Monday, three men were wounded.

The violence appeared to start at 6:45 p.m. when Rodney Jernigan, 34, was shot while walking on a sidewalk in the 3100 block of West Washington Boulevard. The shooter approached Jernigan on foot and shot him in his chest and head.

He was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead at 7:12 p.m., reported the Chicago Tribune.

Less than 24 hours later, Leetemi Daniels, 41, was shot multiple times in his abdomen and chest just after 2:30 p.m. in the same block. Daniels was declared dead at the scene.

The area has seen a gang war between the Black Souls and Gangster Disciples this year. In one case, less than a half-mile from the shootings, seven people were shot, one fatally.

Double Shooting

Another shooting that left one dead and one in critical condition took place in the Albany Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

At about 5:20 a.m., two men were sitting in a vehicle parked in an alley in the 4400 block of North Bernard Street when the shooter approached them on foot and shot one, Roberto Ramirez, 23, who lived a block away, in the head, killing him, reported the Sun-Times.

The other man, who was not identified, was rushed to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, the Chicago Police Department said.

The previous weekend, shootings across the city left three dead and 24 wounded.

Trump Vows Assistance

President Donald Trump has started to focus on the shootings in Chicago, vowing to help officials there.
“I have directed the attorney general’s office to immediately go to the great city of Chicago to help straighten out the terrible shooting wave,” Trump told approximately 4,000 law enforcement officers and their families at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) convention in Orlando on Oct. 8.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions outlined part of the effort on Oct. 19, saying that the increase in murders in Chicago has been in part due to a consent agreement between the city and the American Civil Liberties Union that forced a decline in stop-and-frisk, which police officers use to stop people suspected of engaging in illegal behavior and sometimes turn up illegal guns or other weapons or drugs.
In early October, Trump also met with singer Kanye West, who said he wanted to discuss bringing manufacturing jobs to the city and surrounding areas. They also talked about how to prevent gang violence and reducing violent crime in Chicago, where West grew up.
