The Golden State is home to nearly 83,000 cycle routes, natural parks, beaches and other places to ride, which is one reason it topped the list published May 7 by Buycycle, an online marketplace for used bikes based in Munich, Germany.
“Of course, California has far more to offer cycling families than a plethora of cycling routes,” the company wrote.
The state also has the second-highest safety rating out of the company’s top five states, and the second-highest number of family-friendly hotels, with more than 1,400. California also has the most child-friendly restaurants, reaching nearly 16,000.
California’s countryside also offers cyclists plenty of parks and playgrounds, with nearly 4,700 parks to choose from around the state, and almost 240 playgrounds. The state ranked first in both categories.
California also has more bike tours than any other state.
“In other words, if you’re after a cycling holiday that will offer you the best range of routes and plenty of places to stay and eat, California is by far your best option,” Buycycle wrote.
Florida, also known as the Sunshine State, ranked a close second, thanks to its summer weather and nearly 36,000 cycle routes—the third highest on the list.
The state’s extensive cycle routes offer more than 784,000 miles to pedal. However, the state has fewer child-friendly restaurants than California—just over 15,000, and lagged behind other states in safety.
New York came in third place with its 43,000 cycle routes combining for a total of more than 784,000 miles. The state is one of the most popular cycling destinations in the U.S., with nearly 2,100 parks and green spaces to ride through, and about 64 family bike tours on offer.
However, New York lacks safety, “leaving a lot to be desired in this area,” the company said.
Texas, with nearly 32,000 cycle routes combined with hearty hospitality and spectacular scenery, came in fourth. The Lone Star State also ranked first in safety.
Rounding out the top-five list was Michigan, with 12,600 bike routes and several holiday options.
Bike to Work Week is a yearly celebration during May, the unofficial Bike Month, when people are encouraged to ride their bikes for fun, exercise, and environmental conservation.
Los Angeles County’s Metrolink is offering free rides to anyone bringing their bike onboard during Bike Week. Any Metrolink or Arrow train trip will be free for the riders from Monday through Friday.
Bike to Work Day will be celebrated Friday nationwide.
