SAN DIEGO—California Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones announced a bill on Feb. 21 to prevent local jurisdictions from passing stronger illegal immigrant sanctuary measures than the current state law. It would also mandate cooperation with immigration enforcement for certain violent crimes.

At a news conference held in front of the San Diego County administration building, Jones and local leaders spoke about the intention and importance of SB 554, called the Safety Before Criminal Sanctuary Act, amid persisting loud chants by protesters kept separate from the speakers and supporters by sheriff’s deputies.
