SILVERADO, Calif.—A 71-year-old man was speeding when he failed to negotiate a bend on Santiago Canyon Road and crashed into two other cars in a deadly collision, California Highway Patrol officials said Dec. 19.

Robert Joseph Nicoletti of Rancho Santa Margarita was driving south about 3:40 p.m. Dec. 16 at a “high rate of speed” on Santiago Canyon when he failed to “navigate the curvature in the roadway” and veered into oncoming traffic and slammed into two cars, according to officer Anselmo Templado.

Nicoletti’s Ferrari slammed head-on into a Toyota Venza driven by Pauline Bui, and then collided head-on with a Mazda driven by Daniel Ryan, Templado said.

Nicoletti was catapulted out of the Ferrari, which split in two, Templado said.

Bui was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center with minor injuries and a passenger in that car was taken to Mission Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, Templado said. Ryan was also taken to Mission Hospital for minor injuries.

Santiago Canyon was closed in both directions for about five hours, Templado said.
