The Washington Redskins cut cornerback DeAngelo Hall, he said on Monday. He was released by Washington apparently to clear cap space.
Hall, 29, had two years left on his six-year, $54 million deal that he signed in 2008. Last season, he tallied four interceptions, but Washington’s pass coverage was spotty at best, ranking 30th in the league.
According to the Washington Post, Hall said coach Mike Shanahan told him that the $18 million salary cap penalty that was given to the Redskins forced the team to release him.
“I understand the business side of things,” Hall told the newspaper. “I thanked him for the opportunity and wished them luck. Mike said he really felt bad because I had done everything they asked.”
The former Virginia Tech corner added that Shanahan told him he “kept getting better, kept working hard, kept leading. So he really felt bad. I told him I understand the business side of things. I just wish it had happened sooner than later. But it came down the wire. But Mike did reach out to me.”
Pro Football Focus said that Hall was one of two cornerbacks last season to give up 1,000 yards receiving, according to USA Today. Hall also gave up 374 yards after the catch, the third-highest among all cornerbacks in the league, CBS Sports said.
Besides the Redskins, the Cowboys were the only team to receive a salary cap penalty, according to ESPN.
