A woman from the United Kingdom was horrified as she watched a carer abuse her frail 78-year-old mother and tell her “you stink” on a secret camera.
Stacey George, a carer from Mega Care, was caught on a hidden camera in June last year repeatedly slapping pensioner, Sabina Marsden, snatching her blanket off of her and telling her “God you stink.”
Daughter Gina Owen, 46, who watched the abuse on live-stream on her mobile phone at her desk, burst into the room and immediately confronted the carer, subsequently firing her.
“Within ten minutes of my sister Mandy leaving the house I was watching it on my phone and she slapped my mum four or five times,” Owen said, reported The Sun.
“We only put the camera in because we thought she was being lazy. I didn’t expect to see that, I was shocked. I felt sick,” she added.
Owen, who worked in a close-by electrical shop, said the carer did not seem fazed by her and continued eating her yogurt.
“When I came into the house to see her, I came in so calm and just said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m going to have to let you leave because I caught you slapping my mum on the camera.’”
“She asked how long it had been there and I said 20 minutes, half an hour.
“She looked at my mum, carried on eating her yogurt and said, ‘I’m sorry, what do you want me to do?’” Owen said, reported The Sun.
The family took the video to the police but was shocked when George was only handed a caution.
“We took the video to the police and expected her to be charged but she got off with a caution,” Owen said.
A representative for Northamptonshire Police said they had investigated the report and would meet with the family to discuss their decision not to pursue further charges against the carer.
“After a thorough investigation and a review of all the evidence, a 46-year-old woman was issued with a police caution. Safeguarding vulnerable people is a high priority for the force,” the representative said, reported the newspaper.
Mega Care’s Chief Operating Officer Winner Lawal said George had since left the company and they were appalled and disgusted by her actions.
“Of the 22 months that we cared for Sabina, this same staff member provided more than 96 percent of the total visits. Sabina was the only service user cared for by this member of staff,” Lawal said, reported the newspaper.
The family said they made a decision to release the footage in order to warn other families of George in case she continued to work as a carer.
