University of Minnesota Alert: Gunman in Anderson Hall Flees, Shelter-in-place Lifted

November 11, 2013 Updated: July 18, 2015

The University of Minnesota sent out an alert on Monday saying that there was a gunman in Anderson Hall who threatened a female student while trying to steal her laptop, and ordered people to shelter-in-place.

However, after the girl screamed, the suspect ran and left through the tunnel system. No shots were fired.

The university ordered a shelter-in-place around 3:15 p.m. but lifted the order around an hour later.

The suspect is described as a black male, age around 20, standing 6 feet tall and wearing a black puffy hooded jacket.

Anderson Hall, which has a bookstore, offices, and a dining hall inside, is on the West Bank campus and is near Ferguson Hall and Blegen Hall.

Everyone on the West Bank campus was sheltering in place before the order was lifted.

All classes will continue as scheduled this evening.

Anyone with information about the suspect should call 911.
