HONOLULU—Renowned scientist Virginia Hinshaw saw Shen Yun Performing Arts in a previous year and said it had her coming back again, because it “refreshes my soul,” she said at the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall May 3.

“I think it’s fantastic,” said Ms. Hinshaw, chancellor emeritus and professor of Tropical Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Pharmacology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

“I’ve seen it before, but I wanted to really see it again because it’s really delightful.”

“Vivid is the word that I think of,” said Ms. Hinshaw, a longtime university head who previously served as dean and vice chancellor for the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and provost executive vice chancellor at the University of California, Davis.

Ms. Hinshaw was inspired by the stories the New York-based Shen Yun Touring Company told, and the traditional Chinese values that were presented in the narratives.

“The stories about the people, and also the vivid nature of everything they do, it’s so bright,” she said.

Ancient principles, like good-versus-evil, justice, and benevolence, come through in stories told from classics like Journey to the West and Outlaws of the Marsh, as well as myths and legends, according to the Shen Yun website.

“I think the show has a message about freedom and opportunity, and respect for others,” Ms. Hinshaw said.

This time she brought friends. “I told them it would refresh their souls, and it was intriguing and colorful and told great stories, and I knew they would love it.”

“I think this is one of the very best,” Ms. Hinshaw said. “That’s the reason I keep coming back. Because I just find it very intriguing how talented everybody is and the stories they tell.”

“The stories, the color, the talents, the dance, excitement, I think it is fabulous,” she said.
