ATLANTA—Some universities may be combined, change the way they use space, and share space in the near future, according to the University System of Georgia’s (USG) chancellor, Hank Huckaby. He started the job in July, promising big changes.

He said in remarks to the Board of Regents this week, “We in higher education need to embrace change and work to be its active agents—and not its victim.”

He said educators should not panic at his proposals, noting that he does not intend to micromanage design and building processes, but wants architects, administrators, and educators to work closely together from the beginning of any design process to make sure buildings are functional and flexible, so that they do not need extensive renovation as needs change.

There are 37 institutions in the USG, 35 of which are degree-granting colleges.
