Unemployment claims fell by 23,000 in the previous week to 452,000 for the week of Oct. 16, the Labor Department said in its weekly jobs data release.
The four-week moving average dropped to 458,000, a decrease of 4,250 jobless claims from last week’s revised average of 462,250.
The jobless rate of Americans with unemployment insurance stayed steady at 3.5 percent for the week of Oct. 9, posting the same percentage as the week before.
New York State posted the most new jobless claims, with an increase of 8,558 claims in the week of Oct. 9, followed by North Carolina (+8,470) and California (+7,929). In New York, the new claims were blamed on job cuts in the construction, service, and manufacturing sectors.
The Virgin Islands (-34) and Hawaii (-17) saw the largest decreases in new claims.
