The pro-democracy Occupy Central movement is bringing out the warmer, friendly side of Hong Kongers.
A sense of community and camaraderie is slowly returning to Hong Kong, as young and old alike actively hand out supplies, food, and water to keep the protestors going.
Despite Beijing’s best attempts to convince the world that the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests are violent and disruptive to the city, the reality is that the protestors model behavior — the students and citizens are well-behaved, conscientiously keep the occupied area clean and the traffic paths clear — has been praised internationally, and they have also endeared themselves to well-known Hong Kong cultural figures, garnering their support and approval in the process.
Rather, pro-Beijing elements are the ones responsible for the snippets of ugly, violent scenes at what is turning out to be an extraordinarily peaceful and tolerant display of civil disobedience.
As the citizens and students of Hong Kong continue to make history, expect the Hong Kong spirit to roar into life.
