A San Diego police officer was fatally shot and another injured during a traffic stop on July 28, according to police officials.
Authorities said shortly after the unidentified officers—who are assigned to the gang unit—pulled over a car in the Southcrest neighborhood at approximately 11 p.m. local time, calls were made for emergency cover.

“Other officers were in the area. They arrived shortly on scene and found both of our officers suffering from gunshot wounds,” said San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman in a press conference early Friday morning outside Scripps Mercy Hospital.
The deceased officer has yet to be named pending family notification, but he is described as a husband and father. The second officer was shot in the upper torso underwent surgery and is expected to survive, according to a tweet by the police department.
“It is with a very sad heart that we announce the death of one of our Officers tonight. Pray for his family,” read a tweet from the official Twitter page.
Zimmerman added that the department is “heartbroken” over the shootings.

A suspect was in custody in connection with the shooting and taken to a local hospital for a gunshot wound. An active search for possible accomplices continues.

Other police departments across the nation rallied around the San Diego force on social media.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to @SanDiegoPD,” read a tweet by the Houston police department.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department tweeted, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to @SanDiegoPD the for their loss. #weseeyou #thinblueline #LASD”
“Sending thoughts and prayers to our friends @SanDiegoPD and the family of fallen and injured officer,” tweeted the Boston police department.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump also addressed the shooting via Twitter.
“Two policemen just shot in San Diego, one dead. It is only getting worse. People want LAW AND ORDER!,” he wrote.
