At least two people were injured after gunfire erupted at an Indiana middle school on Friday morning, May 25.
Two victims in the Noblesville West Middle School shooting were taken to hospitals in Indianapolis and families were notified, The Associated Press reported. The suspect is believed to have acted alone.
Police said the victims are a student and a teacher, ABC News reported.
The school is located about 20 miles northeast of Indianapolis, the capital and largest city in Indiana.
“A secondary threat” was reported at Noblesville High School, Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt told ABC. “We have not received any information that this has been anything other than a communicated threat,” Jowitt said. “We are securing the high school and taking steps to make sure that it stays secure.”
Vice President Mike Pence, who is from Indiana, was previously the state’s governor, and tweeted that he is “praying for the victims.”
“To everyone in the Noblesville community—you are on our hearts and in our prayers,” he wrote on Twitter. “Thanks for the swift response by Hoosier law enforcement and first responders.”
Gov. Eric Holcomb said he’s monitoring the situation closely.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this horrible situation,” Holcomb tweeted.
The police chief said the school, attended by more than 1,350 students, has been cleared, but he did not provide details of the incident.
“The situation is contained,” he said, Reuters reported.
A student interviewed by WTTV said the shooter entered a science class and the teacher swatted a gun away from the shooter.
“This is surreal,” Chad Lancaster, a parent, told the Indianapolis Star. “This happens in high school, not here.”
The incident occurred a week after a 17-year-old high school student in Santa Fe, Texas, near Houston shot and killed eight classmates and two teachers.
Karen and I are praying for the victims of the terrible shooting in Indiana. To everyone in the Noblesville community – you are on our hearts and in our prayers. Thanks for the swift response by Hoosier law enforcement and first responders.
