NEW YORK—A small cargo jet headed for an airstrip outside of Chicago crashed into a wooded area Tuesday afternoon claiming the lives of both pilots on board.

Local police stated to CNN reporters that the Lear 35 was intended to land at Chicago Executive Airport located in Wheeling, Illinois, around 1:30 p.m. but never made it to the runway. When the police and fire department arrived on the scene, they found smoldering debris and no survivors.

The only people on the plane were the two men operating the aircraft. There was no evidence of foul play or any sign of trouble before the plane crashed into a dried-up riverbed. It seems pilot error was the cause of the crash, but officials are still awaiting the final report.

“To our knowledge, everything appeared normal up until the aircraft was reported down by the tower at Chicago Executive Airport,” said firefighter Jay Reardon to CNN.

The aircraft belongs to Royal Air Cargo, which uses small jets to make quick shipments of goods that have a restricted amount of time for delivery. Officials on the scene of the crash at the Cook County Forest preserve observed that the plane was most likely empty as there was no evidence of spilled cargo.
