The U.S. Coast Guard said on Thursday that it is investigating the shooting deaths of two of its members at a communications station on the Alaskan island of Kodiak, located approximately 250 miles southwest of Anchorage.

“It is possible that the suspect remains at large,” said Capt. Jesse Moore, the commanding officer on the base, in a statement.

“Since we don’t have all the details, we strongly advise ... all Kodiak residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement officials,” he said, adding that he cannot give out the names of those who were killed until the Coast Guard notifies their family members.

The base and nearby Petersen Elementary School have been put on lockdown until further notice, Moore said.

The Coast Guard told the Anchorage Daily News that FBI agents based in Anchorage would head to Kodiak to aid in the investigation.
