Two Afghan protesters were killed and seven wounded Sunday during a third day of demonstrations against the intended burning of the Quran by American pastor Terry Jones.

Though Jones cancelled his plans to burn copies of the Islamic holy book, violent protests continued in Afghanistan where hundreds of protesters armed with sticks and stones, chanted anti-US and anti-Christian slogans.

The angry protesters tried to storm local government headquarters in the Baraki Barak district in Logar province in eastern Afghanistan, demanding assurance from the governor that the church would not burn the Quran.

“Otherwise we will attack foreign troop bases in our thousands,” one protester Mohammad Yahya, told Reuters.

The news that Pastor Jones of Gainesville Florida had cancelled his plan to burn the Quran on the ninth anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, had not reached the protesters.

In order to disperse the crowd, Afghan security forces opened fire.

On Friday another protester was killed when, in one of many protests across the country, when thousands attacked a NATO-base in northeastern Afghanistan. The demonstrations began after Eid al-Fitr prayers which signal the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
