@KentonCool tweets @ Mt. Everest.

Twitter has reached new heights with the first tweet ever sent from the top of Everest by a British mountaineer on Friday.

Kenton Cool, 37, completed his ninth Everest ascent, funded by Samsung to test out the new Galaxy S II smart phone.

At more than 29,000 feet high, the handset linked into the 3G high-speed Internet signal from Everest base camp, allowing Cool to send out this highly anticipated tweet to his fans:

“Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal & the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset!”

The message generated so much interest that Twitter made it a top tweet and replied to Cool:

“Wow, @KentonCool managed to send the 1st Tweet from an Everest summit. Where’s the craziest place you’ve ever tweeted?”

The Everest base camp 3G facilities were installed in September to provide Internet access to mountaineers at far cheaper rates than the average satellite phone.

“The world is getting smaller and smaller,” Cool told the BBC from the Himalayan peak via the smart phone on Thursday. “We got a 3G signal on the summit of Everest. How incredible is that?”
