Tweets were flying as the Twitter headquarters officially opened in New York on Thursday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg attended the event, and also tweeted a message, “I’m @MikeBloomberg, and on behalf of all NY’ers I’m honored to welcome @Twitter to NYC.”

Bloomberg has been advocating the growth of technology jobs in the city.

Executive Chairman and founder of Twitter Jack Dorsey, also known as @jack, tweeted on Thursday, “@Twitter and New York share the same constant pulse of energy.”

“Fun fact: New York City is the place with the most Twitter users in the world! Welcome to the neighborhood @twitter @jack !!!” tweeted Nylon Magazine.

Twitter’s Madison Avenue office opened in August, but held an official event Thursday. The office is steps away from Grand Central.

Twitter has more than 200 million users as of 2011 and handles more than 1.6 billion searches daily. Over 300,000 New Yorkers follow Twitter accounts established by city government agencies.
